Fifteen Wilton High School rowers headed to Boston this past weekend to compete in the 52nd Head of the Charles Regatta with their fellow boat mates from the Norwalk River Rowing Association (NRRA). The team of nineteen joined 11,000 competitors from over 800 universities, colleges and schools to race at the two-day regatta, the largest of its kind in the world.

Coached by Drew Combs, the NRRA girls’ Women’s Youth Four (four rowers with one oar each, plus a coxswain)–made up of Victoria Markow (Norwalk), Olivia Bernardini (Wilton), Mackenzie Cote (Wilton), Mackenzie Holmgren (Wilton), and Lucy Angus (Norwalk) placed 17th.

The NRRA boys, coached by Yuri Kolomiets, raced two events:  the Men’s Youth Double (two rowers with two oars each) and the Men’s Youth Eight (eight rowers, one oar each, plus a coxswain). The double made up of Oliver Peacock and Kevin Lenihan, both from Wilton placed 8th. The eight of Ethan Reichgut, James Trentos, Liam Jenkins, Jackson Cote, Matt Rauccio, Brad Spiewak, Ryan Purdy, and Ben Hufnagel, all Wiltonians, was steered down the 3-mile course by Bo Pollio (Darien).

Bella Fox (Wilton) was the coxswain for the Women’s Senior Master Four, leading four adult members of the rowing club.

Two spare rowers also made the trip to Boston:  Griffen Leica (Wilton) and Ian Trostle (Pound Ridge).

Norwalk River Rowing, celebrating its 30th anniversary, is looking to continue a very successful fall season.
