Once again, Wilton residents should prepare for traffic disruptions on New Canaan Rd./Rte 106, as the ongoing multi-year construction project there has moved work to the area near Old Boston Rd.
The latest construction update reveals a shift in the project’s focus, at least for the next few weeks, moving from the previously planned bridge closure at the New Canaan town line.
“We were notified that they had to delay that construction at the bridge,” Lt. David Hartman of the Wilton Police Department explained. “So they’ve reopened the bridge at the New Canaan line of Rte. 106 but they are moving their construction to the intersection of 106 at Old Boston, back up into Wilton.”
The primary reason for this relocation involves a water infrastructure project. “They need to get their pipes under this main water line from the reservoir that feeds the city of Norwalk, and replace the section of the main water line,” Hartman said.
Specific traffic management measures have been implemented:
- New Canaan Rd. will be closed between Old Boston Rd. and the New Canaan town line from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday.
- One lane traffic on New Canaan Rd. onto Old Boston Rd.
- Only emergency vehicles and school buses will be permitted access past Old Boston Rd.
- Three law enforcement officers will managing traffic flow
- The detour route redirects through Old Boston Rd. and Old Kings Highway
- Estimated construction duration: Two to three weeks
Residents should anticipate some road surface challenges during the construction period. Hartman candidly acknowledged that temporary repairs might be minimal, likely involving “cold patch” road filling each evening.
Wilton authorities are committed to keeping residents informed and minimizing disruption. “We just wanted people to be aware of the residents in that area,” Hartman noted. “Obviously, they are now going to have to be readjusting at a moment’s notice.”
Motorists are advised to:
- Plan alternate routes during daytime hours
- Expect potential traffic delays
- Follow signage and officer directions
- Check local updates for the most current information
