Sophia Hemschott, a Ridgefield Academy student from Wilton, recently earned an opportunity to perform with the Westport Community Band (WCB). Hemschott, who plays the clarinet, was among 60 sixth grade students chosen from 15 schools in Fairfield County to participate in a concert with the WCB on Friday, May 20 at the Bedford Middle School in Westport. The performance was the culmination of a four-week program called “Play With the Band.”

“Play With The Band” brings together adult and young musicians. Jamie Kaye, music teacher and band director at Ridgefield Academy, it is designed to give the students a chance to learn challenging music and be part of a full size concert band. Kaye plays clarinet in the WCB, and is responsible for pioneering Ridgefield Academy’s involvement in the annual event.

The concert was held at the conclusion of four weeks of rehearsals, and included such ambitious pieces as Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and Meghan Trainor’s “It’s All About That Bass.”
