WHS Students Dancing for a Cause
Every January, junior and senior high school students from Wilton, Fairfield, Weston and Westport have the opportunity to attend the County Assemblies of Fairfield County–two dances that raise funds for local charitable organizations serving Fairfield County children and teens. The formal events–the County Assembly Charity Ball for high school junior girls and their escorts, and the Red and White Charity Ball for senior girls and their escorts–are also intended to promote inter-town friendship among the students from different towns.
The County Assemblies organization is celebrating its 79th year of supporting non-profit organizations across Fairfield County and encouraging philanthropic support among teens from the member towns. The charities are chosen by four student ambassadors from each of the five participating public high schools–Fairfield Ludlowe, Fairfield Warde, Weston, Staples and Wilton–and are typically located in the schools’ respective town.
Wilton High School’s student ambassadors are seniors Sage Zunda and Christina Caratozzolo, along with juniors, Sophie Ackerman and Ana Colburn. In their roles representing Wilton, the four girls are continuing the philanthropic mission of the County Assemblies, and have selected Circle of Care as the recipient of their proceeds.
Founded by Wilton residents Liz Salguero and Dawn Ladenheim, Circle of Care is an organization that seeks to make a difference in the lives of children living with cancer, and their families, during treatment, by providing practical, emotional and financial assistance to the families of the children they support.
The dances are well-attended events where tradition dictates girls do the asking of their escorts to accompany them. The events are formal, and the dress code specifies long, formal dresses for girls and mandatory tuxedos for boys. Both are held at the Stamford Marriott Hotel and it costs $110 for each couple to attend. The Red and White Charity Ball is held on Friday, Jan. 20, and the County Assembly Charity Ball is held on Saturday, Jan. 21.
