Wilton’s town menorah will be lit on Wednesday, Dec. 17 on the Town Green in Wilton Center, to celebrate the start of Hanukkah. The Schneerson Center for Jewish Life, CT is hosting the evening and has invited members of the public to attend. The Schneerson Center’s Rabbi Levi Stone and Wilton town officials will light the candles on the second night of the Jewish holiday.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening.

Every year at Wilton’s Hanukkah celebration, lively music fills the air as attendees dance and light the candle lights. This annual event will include live music, hot potato latkes, Hanukkah gelt, dreidels, and is perfect for the whole family. It is a free event and open to all.

The menorah is a symbol of hope and Jewish pride. The kindling of the Hanukkah menorah is the focal point of the festival, commemorating the victory of a small group of dedicated Jews over the vast Syrian and Greek armies. One of the testaments of the Festival is to celebrate the miracle of the Menorah:  that the little jug of oil used to light the holy eternal light, which should have lasted for only one day, instead lasted for eight days until more pure olive oil was obtained. This was the miracle of Hanukkah.

The Menorah symbolizes freedom and strength of the Jewish spirit and is kindled on each of the eight nights of Hanukkah, which begins the evening of Dec. 16 through Dec. 24.
