6th Grade Girls Basketball

On Sunday, Jan. 24, the Wilton 6th grade girls’ travel team, sponsored by Servco Oil, traveled to New Canaan. They narrowly lost a tightly contested game 30-29.

Wilton started very strong, with Amelia Hughes, Ellie Copley and Leah Martins scoring early baskets. Hughes went on to score 9 points, Copley 8 and Martins 4. Wilton continued throughout the half to outscore New Canaan to lead 19-10 at half time. Erynn Floyd, Morgan Lebek, Olivia Rossi and Cathrine Dineen all contributed 2 points each.

New Canaan played a really strong third quarter to take the lead 24-23. Ellie Coffey, Bella Andjelkovic and Gracie Kaplan all worked hard and contributed multiple rebounds and blocks. The game continued to be very close and with only four seconds left New Canaan scored to win the game 30-29. Both teams contributed to a really exciting game.

7th Grade Boys Basketball

On Sunday, Jan. 24, the Wilton 7th grade boys’ basketball team, sponsored by Ackerly and Ward, was able to beat the snow and neighboring Ridgefield, 51-25. Wilton was led by tight defensive pressure that held Ridgefield to a single point in the second quarter on its way to a 20-9 halftime lead. After long possessions Ridgefield settled for even longer jumps shots. When Ridgefield did venture inside, Matt Murphy’s six blocked shots discouraged return visits.

All nine Wilton players scored, with the post players leading the charge. Michael Coffey had 9 points, many coming off offensive rebounds. Coffey led the team with 9 boards. Matt Gulbin had 8 points and 2 assists to go along with 6 rebounds.  Murphy had 6 points and 8 rebounds.

Owen Lillis (3 assists, 1 point, 1 steal) and Trevor Martines (2 assists, 4 points, and 2 steals) directed an efficient offense. Jimmy McKiernan scored 6 points on 3 terrific drives to the hoop. Kyle Burns (8 points), Mack Kepner (7 points), and Chase Autore (2 points) all scored points in transition. Alex Cocoros did not play due to injury.

On Monday night, Wilton will play Trumbull St Theresa’s in the finals of the McGivney Center Winter Classic in Bridgeport.
