The Women In History day at Miller-Driscoll Elementary School was started by a Wilton mom more than 15 years ago. Held each year since then, the event is a tradition that is much loved by students, teachers and moms alike.
This year almost 40 dedicated volunteer moms arrived dressed in costume, to teach Wilton’s youngest learners (K-2) about the inspiring historical women they’re portraying. Some of the characters included Mother Teresa, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Billy Jean King, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Blackwell, Georgia O’Keefe, Madame Curie, Amelia Earhart, Kristine Lilly and Julia Child.
The teachers love having the women come in character to speak to their students; some even teach lessons around the visitors, who “bring the stories of women to life,” according to M-D assistant principal Shellah Brown.
This year’s co-chairs were Megan Morris, Sarah O’Malley, Lori Fusco, Martha Phelan and Hillary Jackson. They worked closely with the school’s librarian who have always been at the core of the program, supporting the volunteers and helping support the mission by encouraging all students to read about the historical figures they ‘meet’ in the course of the morning.
