After CT ‘Odyssey of the Mind’ Win, Cider Mill 3rd Graders Fundraise to Go to Finals

These 3rd graders sure earned their team name of “Smarty Pants.”

On March 18 of this year, the “Smarty Pants” team of seven 3rd grade students from Cider Mill Elementary School (and one Wilton student at Stamford’s Long Ridge School) competed against other 3rd-5th grade teams from across Connecticut in the Odyssey of the Mind CT State competition.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international competition that promotes creative thinking, problem-solving skills and teamwork. Each team must create, practice, problem solve, and present an eight-minute performance complete with sets, robotics, props, and costumes. This must be completed by the team members (without outside adult assistance). Each team must also answer judges’ questions related to their presentation.

The “Smarty Pants” team from Cider Mill placed first in their division, an incredible accomplishment for one of the youngest teams in the competition. The win also means the team will representing Connecticut at the World Finals at Michigan State University from May 24-27. At the World Finals, Smarty Pants will be competing against the best teams from other states and countries, including teams from Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Japan, Hong Kong, Hungary, Germany, Singapore and Poland.

The team is now raising money for its trip to the World Finals, and to help offset the costs associated with the team’s travel, shipping of props, lodging, etc.. The kids have set up a Go Fund Me fundraising campaign and hope that the community will consider making donations toward their efforts. The total amount they need to raise for this trip is $5,000.

“[It] seems like an enormous number but every donation helps no matter how big or small. Thank you in advance for your support,” the team writes on their Go Fund Me webpage, adding that they’ll be sure to send supporters postcards from the World Finals in Michigan.

The Cider Mill PTA has pledged $1,000 to support team “Smarty Pants,” but they need to raise significantly more to make their goal.
