The Wilton Conservation Commission held its annual Townwide Community Cleanup this past Saturday, March 28. Over 60 volunteers braved the cold weather to pick up litter around Wilton’s roads and the banks of the Norwalk River. Snow showers didn’t stop these spirited Wiltonians from collecting a total of 3,140 pounds of litter, filling an entire dumpster. Pinnochio Pizza again supported the event by offering free pizza for the participants, a welcome treat after a cold morning.
In a letter to the editor (printed in full, below) the chair of the Conservation Commission Daniel Berg expressed his appreciation to those volunteers who gave of their time to take part in the cleanup.
“I would like to particularly mention the outstanding efforts from the Cub Scouts, Wilton Schools, and the Wilton Land Trust, whose volunteers joined commissioners and other Town officials in this annual undertaking. Additionally, a huge thank-you goes out to the fine folks at Pinocchio Pizza, who have supported our efforts for a few years now by providing free slices to all volunteers,” he said.
The volunteers made a tremendous impact in cleaning up the town but according to Mike Conklin, the town’s environmental analyst, there is still more work to be done. The Conservation Commission is asking residents to take a garbage bag with them on their spring walks and pick up litter in their own neighborhoods. Free garbage bags and work gloves are still available through the office of the Conservation Commission in the Town Hall Annex which is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m..
To the Editor,
On behalf of the Wilton Conservation Commission I would like to thank all of the volunteers who enthusiastically participated in the Townwide Community Cleanup day held last Saturday, March 28, 2015. Saturday brought cold and blowing snow, but a stalwart group of dedicated residents came out anyway to help get the town ready for its spring re-debut! Through everyone’s hard work, we collected a substantial amount of litter from our streets, parks and riverbanks. I would like to particularly mention the outstanding efforts from the Cub Scouts, Wilton Schools, and the Wilton Land Trust whose volunteers joined commissioners and other Town officials in this annual undertaking. Additionally, a huge thank-you goes out to the fine folks at Pinocchio Pizza, who have supported our efforts for a few years now by providing free slices to all volunteers.
Given Saturday’s weather challenges, there is still more to be done. I would like to further encourage individuals and groups to still take the time to clean up their neighborhoods. Support for this event is proof that Wilton’s residents are proud to live in a litter free community and are willing to get their hands dirty to keep it looking great every year.
Sincerely,
Daniel Berg, Chairman
Wilton Conservation Commission
