The Wilton Playshop begins its 77th season with the Tony Award-winning play, Dancing at Lughnasa, opening tonight. Written by Brian Friel, Dancing at Lughnasa is a poignant memory play set in Ireland in 1936, as told through the eyes of Michael Evans, who introduces us to the five amazing women who raised him. Into their lives comes a handsome stranger — and their first radio. From these small events spring the cracks that will change the foundation of the family forever. Dancing at Lughnasa was originally presented by the Abbey Theater in Dublin, and won the Tony Award for Best Play during its Broadway run.
The Wilton Playshop production is directed by Mat Young of Norwalk, who returns to The Playshop after directing last season’s intensely haunting drama, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The cast features the finest in local talent, including Patrick Duffy of Cos Cob as Michael, the play’s narrator. The five Mundy sisters are played by Robyn Mortiboys of Norwalk (Agnes), Karen Hanley of White Plains, NY (Rose), Julie Thaxter-Gourlay of Port Chester, NY (Maggie), Shelley Lepetich of Norwalk (Kate) and Alexandria Clapp of Wilton (Christina). David Pirrie of Fairfield plays returned missionary Father Jack, and Jeremy Funke of New Haven plays Gerry Evans. Karen Hanley has also choreographed the production.
The Wilton Playshop is known not only for providing quality entertainment, but also for extraordinary design elements as well. Dancing at Lughnasa is no exception, featuring lighting by Craig Gehr and sets designed by David Cunningham.
Dancing at Lughnasa opens on today, Oct. 18, with shows through Oct. 26. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for students and seniors.
