If you’re one of the several hundred voters who’ve received yellow election forms from the Wilton Registrars, you might be wondering why. Perhaps you’ve moved within Wilton this year? Or you’ve had your mail forwarded to an out of town address?
Each spring, Wilton’s Registrars of Voters Carole Young-Kleinfeld and Tina Gardner (pictured above) are hard at work reviewing a yearlong report of notifications from the U.S. Postal Service’s National Change of Address database to make sure that Wilton’s official voter list is up-to-date and accurate.
This annual canvass of voters–required by Connecticut’s General Statutes Sec. 9-32 and 9-35—requires weeks of research and documentation before official “Confirmation of Voter Residence” letters of inquiry are sent to Wilton voters.
“We mailed Confirmation of Voter Residence letters to voters two weeks ago,” said Gardner, Wilton’s Republican registrar. “Voters who receive these inquiries should verify their residency within 30 days by pre-paid return mail to avoid changes in their voting status.”
Young-Kleinfeld, the Democratic registrar, said that many Wilton residents make temporary changes to their addresses—to escape New England winters or to receive their mail at college. “The last thing we want to do is to jeopardize someone’s right to vote, based on incorrect information. We urge voters to use the self-addressed stamped envelope to clarify their bona fide residence.”
