Have you ever seen the disappearing water trick where a magician pours water into a cup that then somehow vanishes when the cup is turned over? Of course, there’s no actual magic taking place. To make the trick work, sodium polyacrylate is strategically placed in the bottom of the cup — the same material found in disposable diapers. This absorbs the water, making it look like it magically disappeared.

But water doesn’t need any kind of sleight of hand to vanish. It can accomplish that all on its own, thank you very much. It performs this feat so well that most of the time the only way to find it is with special moisture meters or infrared cameras. This is important to know because water, even small amounts of it, can be very destructive to your Fairfield County property.

The elusive nature of water stems from the ways it can move. It spreads in a pattern suggestive of the letter ‘T’ — flowing both outward and downward from its source. Even when it appears to be standing still, it never truly is. The force of gravity steadily draws it into the surface on which it rests; moreover, as water moves, it soaks into any porous material it encounters. But water has one more trick up its sleeve — it can also move upwards, against the force of gravity. It accomplishes this through wicking action. Water sitting at the base of drywall can ascend a wall at one inch per hour for 24 consecutive hours!

Water, with its meandering ways, can easily conceal itself inside insulation. It can lurk behind walls and cabinets or seep into the subfloors of your Fairfield County home or business. It can also hide behind siding, around windows, and under and behind plumbing fixtures. Even when a surface appears dry, don’t be fooled — concealed moisture could still exist beneath or within it. Consequently, your property could suffer from secondary damages such as mold growth, rust, and odors. It can even ruin expensive hardwood floors.
