GOOD To Recognize Emergency Responders: CERT Celebrates 40 Years

Wilton CERT is joining communities nationwide in recognizing National Community Emergency Response Team Week, Sept. 20–26, and celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Community Emergency Response Team.
The 2026 National CERT Week theme, “Carrying the Torch 40 Years & Beyond,” honors the dedication and service of generations of CERT volunteers who have worked to strengthen and prepare their communities for four decades.
Established in 1986, the CERT national program provides community members with training in disaster preparedness, fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster medical operations, team organization and other skills that help individuals and neighborhoods prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters. Wilton CERT was established in 2004 and has been active in preparing the community for disasters.
“As a Community Emergency Response Team, Wilton CERT is an invaluable asset that supports our Department’s public safety mission. Wilton CERT volunteers are trained to support police, fire and EMS, helping preserve peace and quality of life through teamwork, accountability and continuous learning,” Wilton Police Chief Tom Conlan said.
Throughout National CERT Week, Wilton CERT encourages residents to learn more about emergency preparedness and explore opportunities to become involved with CERT. Activities include critical emergency unplanned deployments (downed power lines, fallen trees, motor vehicle accidents, etc.) and planned deployments, including parades, firework displays, sporting events and more.

GOOD To Honor Fabric of Community: Wilton Library Presents SAQA “Local Color 7: Circular Thinking” Fiber Art Exhibit

Wilton Library is presenting “Local Color 7: Circular Thinking,” an art exhibit celebrating the creativity and diversity of contemporary fiber art by members of the Connecticut region of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA-CT). SAQA is a nonprofit organization with more than 4,000 members worldwide, with a mission to promote the art quilt and fiber arts. An Artists Reception will be held at Wilton Library this Friday, Sept. 18, from 6-7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and visitors will have an opportunity to meet participating artists and learn more about the exhibition.
The exhibit explores the different meanings, images and experiences inspired by the circle. There are 36 different interpretations of this universal shape on display, through fabric, stitching, color, texture and design. Juried by nationally recognized fiber artist Betty Busby, “Local Color 7: Circular Thinking” is traveling to other venues throughout Connecticut during 2026.
The exhibit is now on view through Sept. 30. A majority of the works will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the library.
GOOD To Celebrate Ties that Bind Community Members: Hindu Community Honors Wilton First Responders on “Universal Oneness Day”

Every year, the Wilton Hindu community celebrates Universal Oneness Day by honoring the first- and second responders who serve and protect Wilton with a Raksha Bandhan ceremony.
This year’s celebration, held Saturday, Sept. 12, saw Wilton Hindu residents and representatives of the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh USA cultural organization join Wilton’s Fire Department, Police Department, Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) to express their appreciation for all the responders do for the community.
Also taking part were Second Selectman Ross Tartell, Wilton Interfaith Action Chair Steve Hudspeth and Wilton Kiwanis Club member Jack McFadden.
Raksha Bandhan, which translates to the “Bond of Protection,” is a cherished Hindu tradition that celebrates the commitment to care for and protect one another, typically between siblings and family members. This event in Wilton extends the honor to recognize the bond between community members and their first responder protectors.
“According to HSS philosophy, Raksha Bandhan reminds each individual that she/he is responsible for protecting society and the world. HSS volunteers, promise to help the community by reaching out to the local first responders, elected officials, and community leaders to tie rakhis and share sweets with them,” Wilton HSS Chapter Lead Sarvesh Damle said. “We pray for their safety and promise to help them in their time of need.”
