Earlier this week, Mrs. Geluso‘s 2nd-grade class teamed up with Grounds Donut House in Danbury for a unique project that allowed the Miller-Driscoll School students to do some creative writing and recipe imagining–and enjoy a sweet treat of their making.

Each student drew and described their idea for a unique donut and wrote a persuasive letter to the owner of Grounds Donut House to advocate for their donut to be featured in the shop. Lauren Geluso said the project was a fun and meaningful way for the students to develop their persuasive writing skills and interact with the real world at the same time.

Grounds Donut House chose Claire Mack‘s “Chocolate Chip and Extra Sprinkles Donut” as the winner, creating and featuring her donut in the shop on Wednesday, Feb. 3. Each student in the class got to sample the winning donut in person, making their half-remote school day extra sweet.

Geluso offered a huge thank you to Grounds Donut House “for being so kind and willing to make this project really meaningful for the kids in my class. What a fun way to keep the kids motivated, especially during these tricky pandemic times.”
