Wilton Public Schools named Janean Carley to be the new assistant principal of Miller-Driscoll School, replacing Dr. Sheelah Brown, who retired last November. The appointment was announced by Maria Coleman, the director of human resources and general administration for the Wilton School District, in a press release shortly before the schools began the winter break on December 22.
Carley was chosen from a pool of more than 80 applicants.
Press Release:
“A skilled educator whose career in education spans over twenty years, Carley brings a wealth of experience to this new role. She holds a bachelor’s degree in special education and elementary education from Providence College and a master’s degree in reading and writing from Manhattanville College. She pursued her administrative certification at Sacred Heart University.
“Carley has spent her entire career in the Greenwich Public Schools, serving as a paraprofessional, a third and fifth grade teacher, a grade level leader, a learning facilitator, and an assistant principal. She has been the assistant principal at Glenville Elementary School for the past seven years.
“As an assistant principal, Carley has made numerous contributions to her school and her district. She supervises teachers in grades K-2, special educators, and essential area staff. Carley helped to develop her district’s Response to Intervention procedures and handbook, and she is adept at analyzing data to develop goals for students’ social emotional and academic growth. In addition, she chairs Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings, develops the master schedule, and partners with parent groups to plan school events.
“She also served on the building and renovation team when Glenville School underwent a renovation. In this role, she led the transition to a modular facility and back to the new building, managed space utilization, and oversaw communication to all constituents.
“In addition, Carley was very involved in her district’s one-to-one digital learning initiative. Her school was later selected to showcase this project to Fairfield County superintendents. Mrs. Carley has also participated in numerous professional development opportunities, including Harvard’s Universal Design for Learning and Data Wise conferences.
“Carley was selected for this position after a rigorous screening and interview process. She was selected from over 80 applicants, many of whom were currently serving as assistant principals in other districts. Carley participated in three separate interviews: an initial small-group interview, a larger interview with a committee from Miller-Driscoll School, and a final interview with the superintendent, the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, members of the Board of Education, and other district-level leaders.
“Carley impressed the broad-based committees with her record of success in Greenwich, her knowledge of teaching and learning, her ability to design effective professional learning opportunities for teachers, and her clear commitment to supporting all students. For these reasons, the committees wholeheartedly endorsed Carley’s candidacy for this position.
“We anticipate a start date for Carley in late January.”
