Life is full of ups and downs, and sometimes we all need a little extra support to get through the tough times. Wilton Congregational Church understands the importance of having someone to walk alongside you during challenging moments. That’s why the church offers Stephen Ministry, a lay caregiving ministry designed to supplement pastoral care and provide compassionate, one-on-one support for those in need. Stephen Ministry is available to members of the community and there is no charge.
Stephen Ministry equips laypersons with the skills and training necessary to offer effective care to individuals facing various life difficulties. These dedicated caregivers, known as Stephen Ministers, are not professional counselors or therapists, but they are well-trained, compassionate members of the congregation who are ready to provide support, encouragement, and a listening ear.
The relationship between a Stephen Minister and a care receiver is confidential and deeply personal. Typically conducted through weekly visits, these relationships can last for months, depending on the needs of the care receiver. The reasons for requesting a Stephen Minister’s support are as varied as the individuals themselves. Some may be grieving the loss of a loved one, while others might be dealing with a major illness, going through a divorce, or experiencing job loss. Whatever the challenge, a Stephen Minister is there to offer care and support.
At Wilton Congregational Church, the Stephen Ministry program is led by trained Stephen Leaders who oversee the selection, training, and supervision of Stephen Ministers. These leaders ensure that caregivers are well-prepared to provide the highest level of support.
At the heart of Stephen Ministry is its emphasis on confidentiality and trust. Care receivers can be assured that their personal struggles and stories will be held in the strictest confidence, allowing for an open and honest relationship with their Stephen Minister. This foundation of trust is crucial in providing the emotional and spiritual support needed to navigate life’s challenges.
No one has to face tough times alone. At Wilton Congregational Church, Stephen Ministers are ready to walk alongside individuals in need of strength and comfort. If you or someone you know could benefit from the care of a Stephen Minister, reach out to Rev. Caroline Hughes or Rev. Suzanne Wagner by calling the church office at 203.762.5591.
