July 1 marks the start of Wilton’s new fiscal year, and it also represents the day municipal property taxes become due. Tax bills were mailed out to both residents and businesses just yesterday, Wednesday, June 22 by the Wilton Tax Collector‘s office.
Tax bills will reflect real estate and property taxes due for the entire year, and they’ll be split into two payments. However, the tax collector will only send this one July bill; payment for the second half of the total amount becomes due on January 1. Taxpayers must remember to remit that second payment on their own, as the town will not send out a reminder.
One piece of good news is that taxpayers have the entire month of July to pay what’s due for the first payment on most taxes. According to the town website, “Real estate and personal property tax bills of $100 or less, and all motor vehicle taxes are due in a single installment on July 1. Real estate taxes and personal property in excess of $100 are due in two equal installments on July 1 and January 1.”
Taxpayers who do not make payments within one month of the due dates above are delinquent and incur interest at the rate of 1.5% per month from the due dates.*
Taxpayers can either remit payment by mail, in person at Town Hall (M-F, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.), or online via the Town of Wilton website. It’s important to note that paying electronically via the website will incur an extra cost.
Other particulars are detailed on the Tax Collector’s webpage. Call the Tax Collector’s office at 203.563.0125.
*Editor’s note: This quote was originally incorrect on the town website, and has now been corrected to reflect all tax payments due are payable throughout the month of July, not simply on July 1. We have edited the article to reflect changes made by the tax collector’s office after the original publication of our article.
