An initial power outage affecting 700 Wilton customers of CL&P around 7 p.m. on Thursday night resulted from what one utility crew called “burned out wires” on Skunk Ln..

Although power was restored to a majority of the area customers a short 30-60 minutes later, some customers continued to see blackouts and power losses through the evening as crews took 144 customers (according to the CL&P outage webpage) back off line in order to make repairs.

Those customers were affected for close to 90 minutes until power was restored.

As news broke about the outages, Wilton police notified residents via the town’s Yahoo newsgroup email alert about the power problems. But the local crew said the wire had likely been damaged earlier than just last night. “It probably got hit by lightning at some point. But the thing was just split in two,” said one technician who declined to give his name. However, he said that the initial damage probably couldn’t have been seen from the road or by any passing motorist.

As of 12:01 a.m. Friday morning, all CL&P customers had power.
