Around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, Aug. 4, a contractor working on the Eversource gas expansion project accidentally hit and cracked the gas main, causing a gas leak. The incident, which happened where the crew was digging at the intersection of Wolfpit and Horseshoe Rds., occurred during the morning commute, causing traffic backup and delays as drivers were diverted from the typically heavily-travelled location.
With Wilton police officers and fire fighters responding to the scene, the main was quickly repaired, according to Eversource spokesman Mitch Gross.
“They immediately shut off the gas. There were no injuries. It was a quick fix and included the replacement of a small piece of the line,” Gross emailed to GMW.com. According to police the road was opened again for cars by 9:15 a.m..
Work on the gas expansion project up Wolfpit Rd. resumed following the repair. Gross says the incident will not affect the project’s announced finish date of Aug. 15, noting, “We continue to make excellent progress.”
