In a late Friday afternoon (Apr. 17) press release, Wilton officials announced that Department of Public Works Director/Town Engineer Frank Smeriglio is stepping down from his role with the Town of Wilton and has accepted a position with a Connecticut engineering firm in the private sector.
Smeriglio has worked for the Town for the past seven years, first as town engineer and assistant director of the DPW before being named director in 2022.
During his tenure, Smeriglio oversaw a range of major infrastructure and municipal projects, including construction of the new Wilton Police station; the design and installation of the Pedestrian Bridge connecting the train station to Wilton Center; and work on the Lovers Ln. and Arrowhead Rd. bridge repairs, among others.
He also led the department’s response to significant weather events, including the August 2024 flooding and this past winter’s storms, when crews worked extended hours to maintain road safety amid a regional road salt shortage.
In the announcement, First Selectman Toni Boucher praised Smeriglio’s contributions, calling his leadership “distinguished” and highlighting his “unwavering dedication and integrity,” as well as the impact his work had on the town’s safety and infrastructure.
Town officials said Smeriglio will be missed both for his professional expertise and his collaborative approach with staff and residents.
“The Board of Selectmen, the administration at Town hall and all other Town departments deeply value and appreciate all that Frank and his staff have achieved,” the release said.
In the statement, Smeriglio reflected on his time in Wilton, saying, “I have enjoyed this seven-year chapter of my career in Wilton. It has been a pleasure working with the residents and staff at Town Hall, and the amazing team at DPW. The projects we accomplished will stand out as some of the proudest of my professional career.”
The town has begun the process of identifying a successor to lead the department.
Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the date of the press announcement released by the Town. It was April 17, not August.
