The Wilton Fire Department announced two new hires recently–a new Deputy Fire Chief and a new firefighter.

Deputy Chief John Plofkin

John Plofkin, formerly of the Westport Fire Department, has been named Wilton’s new Deputy Fire Chief, effective Feb. 1, 2021.

Prior to his retirement as Westport’s assistant chief, Plofkin served there for over 22 years (1995-2017). In the past he was chief of the Nichols Fire Department in Trumbull, starting in 1980.

Plofkin has also worked in the fire equipment industry, most recently with Shipman’s Fire Equipment.

Fire Commission Chair Casey Healy joined with fire commission members Terrie Schwartz and John Hall, congratulating Deputy Chief Plofkin as he takes on his new responsibilities with the Wilton Fire Department. “We are confident John brings a wealth of experience to the department and we wish him well in his new role,” Healy said.

Plofkin holds numerous state and fire certifications and is a lead instructor with the Fairfield Regional Fire School in its vehicle extrication programs. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Connecticut State University in Business Administration.

Wilton Fire Chief Jim Blanchfield said he looks forward to working with Plofkin, and appreciates what he offers the department. “I have known John for almost 20 years. He is well respected in the fire service community. I believe he has the right combination of experience, skills and knowledge to effectively serve the Wilton community.”

Plofkin lives in Trumbull with his wife, Cheryl.

Firefighter Nick Traycheff

In January, the Wilton Fire Department also welcomed its newest member, Nick Traycheff to the position of probationary firefighter. Traycheff previously served as a firefighter in Naugatuck for four years.
