Using a deep roster and helped by individual event wins from Eric Ding, Lucas Fontana, A.J. Yee and Sam Jacobson, the Wilton High School swim and dive team moved to 4-0 by easily defeating Class L New Canaan High School, 103-73, on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at the Wilton YMCA pool.

New Canaan, led by Division I commit Jack Haley, started the meet strong by winning the 200 medley relay, but Wilton came back quickly in the 200 freestyle with a one-two finish by Ding and Ozzy Andrews to open up a small scoring lead. Haley came back and won the 200 individual medley with Fontana and Hirsh Iyer finishing second and third. New Canaan won a fast 50 freestyle race with Wilton placing second (Jake Mercer), third (Andrew Mims) and fourth (Jacobson). The score was tied through diving after five events at 34-34.

After the break, Fontana put Wilton in the lead for good by winning the 100 butterfly with Gregory Pinchbeck placing third. Wilton showed its depth with the 100 freestyle by placing second (Mercer), third (Ding) and fourth (Mims) and again in the 500 freestyle with Yee at first, Ethan Lam at second and Danny Babashak at fourth.

New Canaan rebounded to win the 200 freestyle relay with Wilton’s Andrews, Ding, Fontana and Mercer at second, and Mims, Jacobson, Pinchbeck and Lam at third. Iyer, Yee and Andrews paced Wilton in the 100 backstroke with second, third and fourth respectively, and Jacobson, Ethan Elias and Harry Zhou provided additional points in the 100 breaststroke at first, third and fourth. Wilton capped off the meet by finishing first (Ding, Andrews, Yee and Iyer) and second (Lam, Adam Mims, Pinchbeck and Babashak) in the 400 freestyle relay to close out a comfortable 103-73 win.

Wilton’s next meet is at Norwalk/Brien McMahon at Norwalk High School on Monday, Jan. 27 at 4 p.m.
