Hillside Cemetery, a treasured landmark in Wilton, is inviting community members to roll up their sleeves and get involved in a special preservation effort. On Tuesday, Nov. 5, Hillside will host a Headstone Cleaning Workshop, offering an opportunity for residents to learn and contribute to the maintenance of this important site.
The workshop will be led by Michael Carroll, director of Rediscovering History. Carroll’s team will guide participants through the process of safely cleaning headstones. Attendees can purchase a comprehensive cleaning kit that includes all the necessary tools and materials for the job.
“This workshop is a fantastic way for people to engage with our local history and learn valuable skills,” Hillside Cemetery project coordinator Pam Brown said. “By participating, you’re not only helping to restore these important markers but also connecting with the stories and heritage they represent.”
The event will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5 from 12-3 p.m. at Hillside Cemetery (165 Ridgefield Rd.).
Carroll will provide expert guidance about the best practices for cleaning and preserving headstones without causing damage. Participants have the option of purchasing a complete cleaning kit for $20 that includes brushes, cleaning solutions and detailed instructions.
According to Brown, cleaning and maintaining headstones is crucial for preserving the history and dignity of those interred at Hillside Cemetery. “As these markers age, proper care ensures that the stories they tell are not lost to time. Participants will take part in important community engagement, and enjoy a day of hands-on learning while contributing to a meaningful cause alongside fellow history enthusiasts.”
“We’re excited to welcome everyone to this event,” Brown added. “It’s a wonderful chance to learn something new and make a tangible difference in preserving our community’s past.”
To participate, contact Brown via email or by calling 203.762.5591, ext. 101. Cleaning kits will be available for purchase at Hillside but are not required to participate. (Anyone who wants to purchase a kit should bring cash.) Comfortable clothing and gloves are recommended. Participants should look for the project tent on the first driveway after entering the cemetery, heading up the hill.
