This spring and summer, members of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States are taking part in a “Eucharistic Revival” pilgrimage across the country as a way to deepen their connection to their faith. They are participating in a coast-to-coast walk that will converge in Indianapolis at the Church’s 10th Eucharistic Congress.
Locally, a large contingent of parishioners of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Wilton will take part in their own walk on Sunday, May 19 (Pentecost Sunday). Led by their pastor, Father Reginald Norman, parish members will start from the church on Danbury Rd. following the 11 a.m. mass and walk to the Gazebo on the Town Green in Wilton Center for a ceremony.
Fr. Norman, known familiarly as Father Reggie, will carry a gold monstrance, the vessel that contains the consecrated Eucharist (the sacramental bread) and exposes it for veneration.
He will walk under a four-pointed canopy held by members of the Knights of Columbus and hymns will be sung by the worshipers along the route.
According to Father Reggie, the procession will “publicly proclaim belief in Jesus’ true presence in the Eucharist. We will experience what the disciples did 2,000 years ago as they walked with Jesus,” he explained.
At the Gazebo ceremony, Father Reggie will deliver comments on the significance of the observance to participants, who will include children who received their First Holy Communion this month.
The ceremony will conclude with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and intoning of the Divine Praises, 18th-century prayers traditionally recited during Benediction
