Wilton Police are investigating a series of late-night break-ins at several businesses in Wilton and are asking for the public’s help.
According to Lt. Anna Tornello of the Wilton Police Department, the break-ins have happened at three locations: the Mohegan Smoke Shop in the Gateway Shopping Center at 14 Danbury Rd. around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 26; the Mobil gas station at 932 Danbury Rd. in Georgetown shortly before 2 a.m. on Friday, June 7; and at the Wheels Citgo gas station at 386 Danbury Rd. shortly after 2 a.m. on Saturday, June, 8.
Most typically, a “crew” of up to four masked individuals arrive in a stolen vehicle, smash the glass door and steal cash and other items. Tornello declined to say how much money or what items were taken in any of the Wilton incidents.
She also said the police cannot release any photos or video taken of the break-ins with the cases still under investigation.
Tornello said that similar break-in robberies have been happening across the state, and that police departments are coordinating on the investigation.
“About 17 jurisdictions up the I-84 corridor have suffered similar criminal activity (over 30 incidents),” Tornello told GMW. “The closest to us are Stamford and Norwalk.”
Tornello did remind residents about removing car keys and locking vehicles, especially at night, as police have observed that many of the vehicles used in the burglaries are stolen from within the same jurisdiction in which the break-ins occur — including at least one of the incidents in Wilton.
Police are asking residents to immediately report any activity they notice at any gas station or commercial area during night hours when the establishments are closed.
