An observant Wilton Police Department officer who spotted a motorist texting while driving Thursday morning, Sept. 5, was able to make an arrest that resulted in the seizure of a cache of marijuana, cocaine, LSD and close to $14,000 in cash.

At approximately 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, Wilton Police Officer Robert Smaldone was in the area of Danbury Rd./Rte .7 and Sharp Hill Rd. when he observed Jesse Daniel Pomponio, age 30 of Watertown, MA allegedly texting while driving. According to the police report, Smaldone stopped Pomponio and detected an odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, officers found approximately 5.5 pounds of marijuana, 50 grams of cocaine, 17 grams of hallucinogenic mushrooms and LSD. In addition, $13,770 of U.S. currency was seized from the vehicle.

Police charged Pomponio with possession of a controlled substance or greater than 1/2 ounce of marijuana; possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell; possession of a narcotic substance with intent to sell; possession of a hallucinogenic substance with intent to sell; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He is currently being held on a $100,000 bond and will be arraigned in Norwalk Superior Court on Friday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. if bond is not posted.
