The Captain David Hawley Society of the Children of the American Revolution (CAR) recently elected several Wilton residents as officers.
New adult officers include Wilton residents Sara Zawoiski as Senior Treasurer, and Mary Bendix as Senior Registrar; these adult leaders help guide the young members in their mission to honor American heritage and promote patriotic education. New Wilton junior officers include Eleanor Zawoiski as Society Recording Secretary, and Michael Zawoiski as Society Registrar.
The Captain David Hawley Society is sponsored by Wilton’s Drum Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The Children of the American Revolution, founded in 1895, is the nation’s oldest patriotic youth organization. Open to individuals under the age of 22 who are descendants of patriots of the American Revolution, CAR fosters a love of history, a spirit of patriotism, and an appreciation for the sacrifices of those who fought for American independence. Through various activities and community service projects, members learn about the importance of their heritage and develop leadership skills.
The Captain David Hawley Society is named in honor of Captain David Hawley, a distinguished patriot from Fairfield. Hawley played a significant role during the American Revolution as a privateer and naval officer, contributing to the American cause through his involvement in the capture of British ships and the defense of Long Island Sound. The society perpetuates his legacy by educating youth about his contributions and the broader history of the American Revolution.
The Captain David Hawley Society, CAR, founded in 1922, has continued to be active, hosting events around Fairfield County that have included participating in Wilton’s Scarecrow Competition, honoring veterans during Wilton’s Veteran’s Day ceremony and participating in a Doughnut Social at The American Legion, Post 68.
