Five athletes from the Wilton Running Club (WRC) qualified for the Junior Olympic National Track and Field Championship, being held this week (July 25–31) in Sacramento, CA. Each athlete qualified by placing in the top-5 in his/her event at the Regional Championship held on July 9-10 at Albany State University in Albany, NY.

Shelby DeJana (pictured above, middle) qualified in the 13-14 age group 200M hurdles by shaving nearly a full second off her qualifying time and finishing 5th with a time of 31.67. DeJana also made the finals in the 100M hurdles, finishing 8th in 18.99. “Shelby competes at a high level in all sprint, hurdle and jump events. Last year she qualified for nationals in high jump. She is a very talented athlete,” coach Kevin Foley said.

Wooder Toby (pictured above, right) qualified in the 13-14 age group long jump with a jump of 17’5.25″ to take 2nd in the event. “This is Wooder’s first year in track and field and he is an outstanding jumper and developing into quite a sprinter too,” Foley noted.

The WRC had two sprinters who doubled in both the 100M and 200M dash at the Region 1 meet. One, Ashley Nicoletti, (pictured above, left) will be making her 5th consecutive national championship appearance with a 3rd place finish in the 11-12 age group 100M (14.64) and 5th in the 200M (28.54). “She may be young but Ashley is a talented veteran and her times at the region meet are not indicative of her real talent. She had to fight some pretty terrible conditions to finish where she did and she knows how to finish a sprint race,” Foley said.

The other double winner was John Wise, who finished 5th in the 13-14 age group 100M in a time of 12.86 and 5th in the 200M in 25.38. “Johnny has taken over one and one-half seconds off his 100M this year as well as two seconds off his 200M, which is nothing less than amazing. He works hard on his technique, is very competitive and it would not surprise me to see him go sub-25 in the 200 in California,” Foley said.

The final qualifier was Jonathon Greco who placed 5th in the 11-12 age group 400M with a time of 1:06.59, which was a new personal record for him. “Anytime an 11-12 year old runs in the 60’s range in the 400M, you know you have a special talent. It is going to be fun to see Jonathon develop in the coming years,” Foley remarked.
