Town of Wilton officials have issued a reminder to all Wilton residents and property owners to be mindful of two weather related potential dangers affecting streets and sidewalks, and to take all responsible action.
Cleaning snow from sidewalks: With the recent heavy snowfall, property owners must clear snow from the sidewalks adjacent to their properties.
Per Chapter 11 of the Town Ordinance, owners of properties adjacent to the sidewalks shall remove snow and/or cover ice with suitable material within the first six hours of daylight following the accumulation of snow/ice.
“We encourage property owners to make appropriate arrangements. Per ordinance, fines may be levied, which we hope won’t be necessary,” officials wrote in a press release.
Water discharge onto roads: According to the town’s press release, in 2024 there were many areas in town where water discharged from private property onto town roads. This water freezes during cold weather, causing hazardous ice conditions on roadways.
According to the Residential Building Code Chapter 4 “Foundations” R401.3, (Drainage): “Surface drainage shall be diverted to a storm sewer conveyance or other approved point of collection that does not create a hazard.”
“Property owners need to review these conditions from their property, and make the necessary modifications to their drainage system to prevent water from flowing onto the roadways,” officials wrote in a press release, adding, “Thank you for your immediate attention to these issues.”
