We’ve all heard the scary, horror stories and seen the in-depth reports in Time magazine. Now, the Wilton Family YMCA is hosting a Healthy Living Lecture series on “Concussions in Youth Sports” on Tuesday, March 24 at 6:30 p.m..
Presented in partnership with by the Stamford Hospital Orthopedic & Spine Institute, the discussion will cover many topics, including: concussion overview; what coaches need to know about concussion; how to recognize a concussion; signs and symptoms; concussion danger signs; what to do when it happens; return to play; prevention and preparation; and the importance of baseline ImPACT testing.
The talk will be presented by Christina B. Kunec, PsyD., a full-time clinical neuropsychologist in Stamford Hospital’s Concussion Center, where she is responsible for conducting neuropsychological testing as the basis for guiding the appropriate treatment for pediatric and adult patients diagnosed with concussion. Dr. Kunec received her Doctorate in Psychology at the Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology at Widener University in Pennsylvania. She also holds Masters Degrees in Clinical Psychology from Widener and General Psychology from American University in Washington, DC. Prior to coming to Stamford Hospital, Dr. Kunec completed her 2-year neuropsychology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Sports Medicine Concussion Center, one of the most elite programs in the country. During her training, she provided clinical care and conducted research on sports injuries with elementary school children, as well as professional athletes. A member of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Kunec has conducted research for the National Institute of Health, co-authored several papers, and is a frequent lecturer on the causes, and potential short- and long-term health effects and treatment, of concussion.
