Swimming

Robby Giller, a junior at Wilton High School, helped lead the Wilton Y Wahoos to yet another win at the CT Senior Championships held March 3-6 at Wesleyan University. He took home gold in the 1,000 yd. freestyle (setting a new Wesleyan University pool record with a time of 9:18.05) and the 1,500 m freestyle (pictured here, below). Giller also won for High Points—Distance and High Points—Overall at the meet.

Basketball

Wilton 8th Grade Girls Travel Basketball Team Wins FCBL Championship

The Wilton 8th grade girls’ basketball team won the Fairfield County Basketball League championship on Saturday, March 5 with a strong 44-37 victory over Trumbull St. Teresa.

After a tight first half in which Wilton led 21-20, Wilton broke the game open in the third quarter to lead by double digits for most of the second half, before finishing with a 7-point victory. Wilton was led by Sophie Sudano, who finished with 17 points, five steals and several assists. Francesca Goncalves was a major force in the game, leading the team with 11 rebounds and contributing 10 points, including key baskets down the stretch. Paula Perez contributed 8 points including key baskets that resulted in Wilton breaking the game open in the second half. Nancy Lynch contributed 7 points before having to leave the game due to an injury in the third quarter and inspiring her teammates to push for the win. Zara Wiest was a force on the boards, intimidating the Trumbull players by altering shots while contributing 4 rebounds and a basket. Fiona O’Brien added 3 steals; Grace Cahill and Caitlin Greef contributed with rebounds along with strong defense. Zoe Rappaport and Anna Breen were missed during the game but provided inspirational support from the sideline.

Congratulations to the Wilton 8th grade girls for finishing the season strong and bringing home the championship.

Gymnastics

Fifty-four Wilton Y gymnasts competed at the Southern Connecticut League Championships this past weekend. More than 250 gymnasts from Darien, Rye, Lakewood-Trumbull, Westport-Weston and Wilton participated in the March 5-6 event in Trumbull. Wilton had seven All-Around Champions:  Michaela Kane (Level 4), Olivia Mannino (Level 5), Rachel Esslinger (Level 6), Sarah Cross, Kate Ginsburg, and Sam Farhi (Level 7), and Grace Breen (Level 8).

Level 3

In the 8-year-old division, Alyssa Mariani took 1st place on vault (9.6), 3rd on beam, 4th on bars, and 5th all-around. Nine-year old Lauren Condon placed 3rd on beam (9.05) and 4th on vault (9.0) and floor. Among 10-year olds, Alyssa Smeriglio garnered 1st on bars (9.5) and floor (9.4), 2nd on beam (9.2) and all-around, and earned a 9.25 on vault. Ella Arghirescu placed 3rd on floor (9.25) and 4th on beam (9.1) and all-around. Emma Incao placed 5th on beam and earned a 9.15 for vault. In the 11’s age group, Samantha Bauer took 1st place on beam, 2nd on floor and all-around, 3rd on bars (9.25) and earned a 9.0 on vault. Becky Arnowitz won 1st place on floor (9.05), took 3rd place on vault (9.45) and all-around, and 5th on bars (9.2). Gemma Huck placed 3rd on beam and 4th on floor. Isabella Giordano (12-year old ) took 2nd place on vault (9.4), floor, and all-around, 3rd on beam, and 5th on bars.

Level 4

In the 9-10 age group, Ashley Umhoefer finished 3rd on bars (9.0) and all-around, and 4th on floor (9.1). Sophia Blessing placed 5th on vault (9.025) and beam. In the 11’s age group, Kaylie Berghaus took 2nd on bar (9.45), 3rd on beam, and 4th all-around. Maddie Rosa placed 5th on bars (9.15) and scored a 9.0 on vault. Donna Stepnowsky placed 3rd on floor. Alyson Scheurkogel placed 4th on beam. Chloe Jureller finished 5th on vault (9.05) and floor. In the 13-plus age group, Michaela Kane was the All-Around Champion, and also took 1st on bars (9.0) and vault, 2nd on floor, and 3rd on beam. Ava Walker won 1st place on beam, 3rd on vault, and 5th all-around.

Level 5

In the 10-11 age group, Olivia Mannino was the All-Around Champion, also placing 1st on bars (9.2) and beam (9.0) and 2nd on vault and floor. Among the 12-year-olds, Jessica Wu placed 4th on vault, beam, and floor. Peyton Gildersleeve took 4th on floor and 5th on vault and beam. Emily D’Onofrio placed 3rd on bars (9.2) and floor, and 5th on vault. In the 13-14 age group, Isabella Jureller finished 2nd on beam, 3rd on vault and all-around, and 4th on bars and floor. Katie Walsh won 1st place on vault (9.2) and placed 4th on beam and all-around. Nicole Beecher finished 2nd on vault and floor, and 5th on bars, beam, and all-around. Stephania Mariani won 1st place for beam, and placed 5th on vault and floor.

Level 6

In the youngest age group, Mia Karlehag placed 1st on floor (9.2), 3rd on bars and all-around, and 4th on vault and beam. In the 12-13 age group, Lilly Byrnes won 1st place on floor (9.25) and beam (9.15) and finished 3rd on bars (9.05) and all-around. Erin Daugherty placed 5th on vault (9.15). In the oldest age group, Rachel Esslinger was the All-Around Champion, also taking 1st place on vault (9.1), floor, and beam, and 2nd on bars.

Level 7

Sarah Cross was the All-Around Champion of the youngest age group, taking 1st place on all events.  In the 12-13 age group, Sarah Collias finished 3rd on vault (9.1) and 5th on bars, beam, and floor. Among 14 year olds, Kate Ginsburg was the All-Around Champion, also winning 1st place on vault (9.0), floor (9.0) and beam, and finishing 3rd on bars. Kayla Heber won 1st place on bars, and finished 2nd on beam, floor, and all-around, and 3rd on vault. Sam Farhi was the All-Around Champion of the oldest age group, also taking 1st on vault (9.2), bars (9.25), beam (9.05) and floor (9.1). Alyssa Jarrett finished 3rd on bars and 4th on vault, beam, floor, and all-around.

Level 8

In the Junior division, Marra Woodring placed 2nd on floor, 3rd on vault and all-around, and 4th on bars and beam.  Sam Huffman won 1st place on bars (9.35), and finishing 3rd on beam and 4th on vault, floor, and all-around. In the Senior division, Grace Breen was the All-Around Champion, also taking 1st on floor, vault, and beam, and 3rd on bars. Lizzie Berta won 1st place on bars (9.15) and finished 2nd on floor and 3rd on vault, beam, and all-around.

The Level 7 and 8 squads both took 1st place. Levels 3 and 5 took 2nd place, Levels 4 and 6 took 3rd place.
