January and February can be cold and quiet — a season to remember that Hillside Cemetery’s rolling hills and tranquil grounds remain a timeless site of tribute and honor as the final resting place for loved ones. Although owned and operated by Wilton Congregational Church, Hillside is a non-sectarian cemetery — open for burials regardless of religion or residency.

Hillside Cemetery is buzzing with exciting updates!

New Arboretum Designation: Hillside was officially recognized as a Level 1 Arboretum by the ArbNet Accreditation Program. With over 27 unique tree varieties adorning the grounds, this designation celebrates Hillside’s natural beauty. Each tree will be marked with a plaque showcasing its genus and common name, inviting visitors to explore and learn. This spring, an elegant allée of cherry trees generously donated by a dedicated patron will add charm.

Green Cemetery Certification: Hillside Cemetery received the Green Burial Ground Certification from the Green Burial Council — a significant achievement, demonstrating compliance with standards designed to preserve and steward land through burial. This national recognition highlights Hillside’s commitment to eco-friendly burial practices.

Preserving History: Hillside has been a notable cemetery for over two centuries. In the spring of 2025, Rediscovery Historian will begin gravestone cleaning and restoration to preserve some of Hillside’s oldest markers, dating back to the late 1700s. This ongoing effort ensures the stories of our past are protected for generations to come.

Expanded Cremation Memorial Garden: Hillside recently unveiled the newly expanded Cremation Memorial Garden, a serene space designed for the burial of cremated remains. Featuring winding paths, inviting benches, and newly planted flower beds, this area offers the perfect setting for quiet contemplation and remembrance.
