The following is a press release from the office of Wilton Public Schools’ superintendent Dr. Gary Richards. It was released on Friday, Jan. 31 at 3:30 p.m.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gary Richards announced today that radon re-testing in the Wilton schools will take place in two phases, and will be conducted by Cardno ATC, using one of their approved sub-contractors, EnviroPlan.

The first phase will be conducted at Miller-Driscoll School from February 19-21. The second phase of testing will include Cider Mill, Middlebrook and Wilton High School. This phase will take place March 5-7.  Once a report is issued, the results will be shared with the public.

In addition to the radon testing, the district is in the process of identifying an independent, third-party indoor air quality environmental consultant/industrial hygienist.  The selected firm will be charged with:

(1) reviewing the information from the earlier testing of Miller-Driscoll School

(2) conducting comprehensive IAQ testing at the Miller-Driscoll School; and

(3) providing recommendations for further action.

“Our goal is to have this review underway in the next few weeks,” Richards said.  “Once the review and testing are completed, the results will be shared with the school community.”

Richards also explained that the district’s internal HVAC technician is spending considerable time at Miller-Driscoll School monitoring the ventilation equipment and making adjustments as needed.  “He is working diligently in each of our schools to ensure that it all of our heating equipment is working properly during this unusually frigid season.”

Richards reiterated his previous statements about indoor air quality at Miller-Driscoll:  “Based on the best information we currently have, we believe that Miller-Driscoll School is a safe environment for our students and staff members.”
