When Middlebrook Middle School students walk into school today, they’re going to find a surprise waiting for them in the bathrooms. All nine restrooms are being decorated with oversized inspiring quotes and motivational sayings as part of a PTA effort to encourage positive school climate.
Parent Carolyn Lyon was inspired when she saw the idea online, and brought the idea to PTA president Hillary Morrissy last year.
“We thought it would be great at Middlebrook,” Morrissy says. Soon after we chatted the swastikas appeared and so we thought it was definitely something we needed. Carolyn put together a power point presentation, we met with administrators to show them every quote.”
Administrators embraced the idea right away, and the Middlebrook PTA quickly got it funded, to a total of around $700. The decals were easy to find and order online, according to Lyon.
Morris and Lyon met with volunteers Monday after school to begin installing the wall decals. Some of the quotes come from historical figures and celebrities, from Theodore Roosevelt to Arnold Schwarzenegger to Dr. Seuss. Others are short phrases or sayings, and all with the intent to boost spirits and confidence.
“It’s sending positive messages, cute quotes, maybe to inspire someone to smile, or think differently for the day,” Lyon says, adding that she’s going to even put a couple up in faculty bathrooms. “They need a pick-me-up once in a while too, with all the work that they do.”
Additional volunteers may be needed–look for notices on the Middlebrook Parent Page on Facebook for notices.
