The Wilton Board of Finance (BoF) is scheduled to present the proposed 2014-15 school budget tonight at a public hearing. The hearing will take place at Middlebrook School in the auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

As of now, the budget as proposed by the Board of Education is at $79.15 million, a 3.95 percent increase over the budget for the current 2013-14 school year.

The BoF will hold a similar public hearing on Tuesday evening, March 25 at 7:30 p.m. on the Board of Selectmen‘s budget proposed for next year. That hearing will also take place at the Middlebrook School auditorium.

As explained on the BoF webpage, “Typically, the BOS and BOE approve their budgets and Five-Year Capital Plan by the end of February and submit them to the BOF for review in early March. The BOF holds public hearings thirty-five days before the Annual Town Meeting to hear public comment on the respective budget requests and the proposed tax rate. In early April, the Board of Finance holds several meetings at which it refines revenue estimates, considers the comments expressed at the public hearings, decides if the respective budget requests should be changed, determines an acceptable general fund balance and, lastly, determines the mill rate necessary to support the budget. The BOF may decrease, increase or leave the BOS and BOE budgets unchanged. Pursuant to the General Statutes, the BOF cannot make changes to individual line items in the BOE budget. It can only change the total BOE appropriation. It is then up to the BOE to designate how the total will be allocated to the individual lines.”

Town residents are encouraged to attend the public hearings and to make comment on the proposed budgets. The meetings are also televised on Cablevision Channel 79.

BoF members also welcome public comment via email. Residents may send email to the members of the Board of Finance at the general email address,, and all members will receive the correspondence. However, they do remind anyone who considers contacting the board that, “all communications sent to Town boards and officials become part of the public record and are subject to legal requirements for disclosure and retention.” Name and postal address should be included.
