The Wilton Board of Education has extended School Superintendent Kevin Smith’s contract for another three years, increasing his base salary by 3.5%.
The new contract, which board members approved at a special meeting on June 19, is effective starting July 1 through June 30, 2029. If Smith completes the extension, he will have served as Wilton’s superintendent for 15 years.
Board Chair Ruth DeLuca said Smith has the full confidence of the board.
“Under Dr. Smith’s leadership and quiet, steady stewardship, the district delivers to our children a world class education in service of Wilton’s commitment to public education for a better world,” DeLuca wrote in an email to GOOD Morning Wilton.
The 3.5% increase brings Smith’s base salary to $321,015.
DeLuca said most terms of the contract stayed the same except for a stipulation that allows Smith to be reimbursed $3,000 for instate transportation expenses. According to the contract, when Smith uses his own vehicle outside of the state on school business, he will be reimbursed at the IRS reimbursement rate on vouchers that he will submit.
The school board evaluates the superintendent’s performance each year, during which time the terms of the contract will also be discussed. The superintendent’s contract and salary will be reviewed and set again prior to July 1 next year, but any increase will be retroactive if approved after that date, according to the contract.
Smith was hired to lead the Wilton School District in July 2014.
The Connecticut PTA chose Smith as the Outstanding Superintendent of 2022. The Wilton PTA nominated Smith, who received 40 letters of support for the award.
