Key Points

  • A juvenile girl reported an alleged sexual assault while running near Allen’s Meadow.
  • Police identified and arrested an adult male suspect within two to three hours of receiving the report.
  • Investigators say there is no ongoing threat to the public and no indication the suspect and victim knew each other.

Why It Matters: The rare incident has understandably raised public concern. The story explains what police know, how they quickly identified a suspect and why authorities say residents are not facing an ongoing public safety threat.

Wilton Police arrested an adult male Sunday, June 21, after a juvenile girl reported being sexually assaulted while running in the area of Allen’s Meadow near Wilton High School, according to Wilton Deputy Police Chief Rob Cipolla.

Police received the report at approximately 10:55 a.m. Sunday and identified and arrested a suspect within two to three hours, Cipolla said, using a combination of witness information, investigative work, license plate reader technology and video surveillance.

After being taken into custody, the suspect was charged with fourth-degree sexual assault, risk of injury to a child and second-degree breach of peace.

According to Cipolla, authorities are not yet releasing the suspect’s identity because the investigation remains active and involves a juvenile victim.

At this point in the investigation, he said police have found no indication that the suspect and the victim knew each other.

Cipolla declined to disclose whether the suspect is a Wilton resident and said police are withholding identifying information while detectives continue to follow up on aspects of the investigation.

“We want to make sure this process is done right,” Cipolla said. “We want to make sure we do our due diligence and don’t jeopardize anything with our casework.”

The incident occurred near Allen’s Meadow, in the area adjacent to Wilton High School, and was reported immediately after it happened.

Cipolla praised the officers’ investigative work and swift response. He said the arrest was aided by observations made at the scene as well as modern investigative technology, including the department’s license plate reader system, Flock cameras and other available surveillance resources.

“They identified a vehicle of interest. They used available technology that they had at their disposal, investigative resources to quickly develop a suspect, and within hours of receiving the report, they located that suspect and had taken him into custody,” he said.

The suspect was arrested in Wilton and bond was set at $50,000. The suspect posted a 7% surety bond as permitted under Connecticut law, and is scheduled to be arraigned July 1 in Stamford Superior Court.

Although news of the incident has raised concerns, Cipolla emphasized repeatedly that police believe there is no ongoing threat to the public.

“While we understand the fear and concern an incident like this causes, I want the community and the public to be assured that our response was swift, and it shows our commitment and the astuteness of our officers, and the response to protect the well-being of everyone in our town,” he said.

“We found the person we were looking for, we made the arrest,” he added.

Cipolla said incidents of this nature are rare in Wilton but acknowledged the concern such allegations create for families and the broader community.

“Our community obviously has experienced something that understandably causes a great deal of fear and concern,” he said. “We share that concern.”

Cipolla described the response as a department-wide effort involving patrol officers, investigators and other personnel working together to identify the suspect and support the victim.

The deputy chief also stressed the importance of immediate reporting, noting that the victim’s prompt report helped officers quickly develop leads and make an arrest.

Police are asking anyone who was in the Allen’s Meadow area around the time of the incident and may have witnessed anything suspicious to contact the Wilton Police Department at 203-834-6260 or submit information through the department’s online tip system.

While the criminal investigation continues, Cipolla said the department is also working with victim-support organizations to ensure the juvenile receives appropriate resources and assistance.
