Woodcock Nature Center invites the community to meet Cheyenne the red-tailed hawk at the nature center on Saturday, April 2 between 2-4 p.m. The community will meet the nature center’s incredible new hawk in person along with other animals that recently came to call Woodcock home, including Rosa the red kneed tarantula and Uno the wood turtle.
Woodcock Nature Center’s more than 20 reptiles, amphibians, birds of prey (and even the roaches!) help educators bring to life the impacts that humans can have on their environment and play a crucial role in much of Woodcock’s community programming.
The “Welcome Cheyenne and Friends” event on April 2 is for all ages and will include nature activities for kids, animal meet-and-greets, and a brief official welcome and introduction to Cheyenne at approximately 3 p.m. The nature center building will also be open for visitation along with the pavilion, natural playground and trails. Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee Truck will be onsite for those who wish to purchase beverages during the event.
Cheyenne, the nearly 4-year-old hawk, was found on the ground in Newtown with a badly broken wing and was rescued by rehabbers at Christine’s Critters, a local non-profit whose mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and release or re-home injured birds of prey. As a result of being on the ground for so long, Cheyenne’s wing is fused in a “tucked” position which means she is unable to fly. She spent more than a year in the care of Christine’s Critters recovering and learning to trust her human caregivers. Otherwise healthy and ready to teach, the team at Woodcock acquired her this past fall and looks forward to utilizing her this spring in upcoming programming and well beyond.
Tickets to the ‘Welcome’ event are $15 per person (ages 3-years-and-older) with all proceeds supporting animal care. Attendees can arrive at any time between 2-3:30 p.m.; a formal presentation will occur at approximately 3 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on the Woodcock website. Space is limited. The event will be held rain or shine.
