Every Tuesday, GMW goes to a briefing with the Wilton Police about the prior week’s police activity. You won’t find the police blotter on GMW, for lots of reasons, but when there’s important news related to the police, we’ll report it.
For tonight–New Year’s Eve–WPD Capt. John Lynch says there will be extra officers on the roads, checking for impaired drivers, DUI, speeding and other unsafe situations.
“We’re not doing a DUI roadblock, those we have to advertise in advance. But we will have units out there, under the state grant, up to two a night, between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. The officers will look for violations focusing on DUI, speeding and that kind of thing. As will other towns, I’m sure. You may see some roadblocks [in other towns] but not in Wilton,” Lynch said.
Lynch referred to a state Department of Transportation highway safety division grant to support increased DUI detection and enforcement by local police departments. He explained that the grant provides 75-percent reimbursement to local municipalities of overtime costs related to DUI patrols by “special enforcement units” or SEU patrols.
