Someone vandalized the Wilton Hindu Mandir temple, breaking a glass window, according to Wilton Police. They’re investigating the incident, which was reported yesterday, Monday Sept. 25.
The broken window was reported by Swami Balgopal, spiritual leader of the temple, who discovered the vandalism on Monday. It was unclear when the window was broken.
The broken window was the first incident at the Westport Rd. temple since it opened three years ago. The window is valued at $1,500.
Rabbi Rachel Bearman of Temple B’nai Chaim (TBC) posted a message on Facebook about the incident: “This kind of behavior is not acceptable. We will stand with our friends in the Hindu community. I have reached out to Swami Balgopal and have asked what TBC can do to help him and his congregation.”
Shannon White, the pastor at Wilton Presbyterian Church, posted on Facebook that she went to the temple Monday evening to offer her personal support and that the religious community will also respond with assistance, writing, “We can’t allow this kind of intolerance and intimidation in our town. Wilton Interfaith Clergy and WIACT (Wilton Interfaith Action Committee) will respond.”
